HEIC is the high-efficiency format Apple has used for iPhone photos since iOS 11. It stores images at roughly half the size of JPG with the same quality, but it is not supported everywhere outside the Apple ecosystem.
HEIC opens natively on iPhone, iPad and recent macOS. On Windows or Android you may need the HEIF extension, or simply convert it to JPG first.
GIF is an old but universal format best known for short looping animations. It is limited to 256 colours, which makes it great for simple graphics and memes but poor for photographs.
