JPG (also written JPEG) is the most common image format on the web. It uses lossy compression to keep photo files small, which is perfect for photographs, email and websites, but discards fine detail and cannot store transparency.

HEIC is the high-efficiency format Apple has used for iPhone photos since iOS 11. It stores images at roughly half the size of JPG with the same quality, but it is not supported everywhere outside the Apple ecosystem.
HEIC opens natively on iPhone, iPad and recent macOS. On Windows or Android you may need the HEIF extension, or simply convert it to JPG first.
