FLV (Flash Video) was the format of web video during the Adobe Flash era. Flash is now discontinued and modern browsers no longer play FLV, so old FLV clips usually need converting to MP4 to be watchable today.
FLV no longer plays in browsers; use VLC to view it, or convert it to MP4 for phones, editors and everywhere else.
M4V is Apple’s take on the MP4 video container, used by iTunes for films and TV shows. It is almost identical to MP4, but store-bought M4V files can carry DRM copy protection; renaming to .mp4 often works, otherwise a real conversion is needed.
M4V plays in QuickTime, iTunes/Apple TV and VLC; for wider support convert it to MP4.
